EXPRESSIVE ABSTRACTION

I am an expressive representational abstract painter - whew! What does that mean?  I conjure a place, an image, a feeling I’ve had, usually in nature, and work to capture the essence of that place, or thing. Each piece evokes a sense of place, without an obvious description of that place; it is the unspoken nature of the work that inspires and intrigues.

Although these pieces seem, outwardly, to be random markings, there is a method to the madness in the laying down of color, texture and movement.  Highly motivated by color, the existential elements of place reveal themselves as I proceed with an ultimately emotional connection to the work.

Seeing the pieces in person, up close, invites you to find the hidden gems of mixed media, of knife stroke, and layers underneath layers of paint. The color beneath informs the color above it, and the two are married through the spray of water and intentional destruction. This allows the viewer to discover something new each time they take a look; a pop of color hidden just out of reach, or a scribble of pastel inviting your eyes to explore more.

THE EARTH

This work is reflective of the complexity of nature, and my emotional connection to it all.  Each piece reflects a sense of observed chaos and beauty, coupled with uninhibited free flowing creativity and artistic intent.  All are presented as an interpretation of what I see and feel around me, particularly as it relates to the changing planet.

The color palette is rich in earth tones and layered in various textures and organic forms inviting the viewer to take a closer look.  Indeed, these pieces lend themselves to closer scrutiny, like nature itself, in order to discover all the hidden gems of knife stroke, color, texture and scraping.  They are a combination of acrylic and oil, on canvas, applied with a heavy palette knife technique - added, subtracted, deconstructed, and then added again (or not).

This work is definitive, yet open to interpretation, and my hope is that it will speak to someone in a personal, honest, and truthful way.  Aside from a literal interpretation of any kind, this work creates a visual experience that is undeniable; it is rich, beautiful, organic and thought provoking.

THE CREATIVE JOURNEY COLLECTION

The creative journey has taken me from my beginnings as an artist to my most recent collections and pieces.  It is an era of experimentation and discovery.

At times, even if I'm working on a collection, I like to steer off the path to create something different and unique.  For example, while painting abstracts, I might get an itch to do some aspens.  I might be asked to paint a bison!  These forays into something different keep me on my toes, and my creativity fresh.

THE I AM NOT SIMPLY GREEN COLLECTION

ON SALE, IN THE SHOP!!!

These works are reminiscent of the 1960s paintings that my uncle created, but with a modern twist.  I hope to elicit a retro vibe with an illustrative quality. The circles are added to give the work a bit of whimsy, and to allow us not to take them all too seriously.

Harry Chapin wrote a song, in 1978, titled “Flowers are Red,” which immediately resonated with me. This song had to have been written just for this collection!

Why do I paint plants red and turquoise, and blue and green? Because, "there are so many colors in the flowers, and I see every one." I tend to not like to follow the "rules" when painting, and love bold colors, this is reflected in so much that I do. Purple rocks? Of course!  Turquoise leaves? Why not? Creativity does not have to follow "rules" - art is a medium for which we can lose all the constraints and restraints of expectation, and explore that which makes us happy; nothing more, nothing less.

For me, color is the primary thing that draws me to any art -  color evokes a response that is memorable, pleasureable, and sometimes, emotional.  It doesn’t always have to be “in your face” bright, it could be subtle, but I always prefer it to be surprising and interesting.  I wish for people to look at these paintings and be drawn to them, maybe for some unknown reason, and every time they look at them they are surprised, and ultimately, happy.
