The Chair
I read something in a book about how, if you look around any artists studio, you will always find "The Chair". This is an essential piece of artistic equipment. Why? You ask. This is the place one sits and contemplates a work in progress. The place you sit and stare, with no expectations, to see what jumps out at you. You notice things. Sitting and looking allows you to step back and really assess a piece, what is speaking to you, what is bothering you? Let the work talk to you, whisper to you, or shout at you. This may lead to fixing, editing, or starting over, all of which I have done at various times. The latest piece that I did took some sitting, and subsequently evolved into something much better. So...here's to "the chair!"
